As North Carolina deals with the aftermath of Hurricane Florence and the impacts of storm-related flooding, several state and national organizations are considering the long-term outlook for the coastal region.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, the Center for Climate and Security, North Carolina Sea Grant, and the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership will host a film screening and panel discussion on current and future impacts of sea level rise on North Carolina's military installations and coastal communities. The event will take place Monday, September 24 at the NCSU Hunt Library at 2:00 p.m.
These organizations are creating strategies to prepare both the military and coastal communities for future extreme weather events and flooding caused by sea level rise.
The event will begin with a screening of Tidewater, an award-winning film from the American Resilience Project that details the challenges sea level rise presents to military readiness, national security, and coastal communities in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.
Following the film screening, a panel of military, academic, and government experts will discuss current coastal conditions in North Carolina, the risks posed by sea level rise, and opportunities to build resilience at military bases and in coastal communities.
