Unique Wetlands

Certain wetlands within the state are of exceptional state or national ecological significance and require additional protection. Thirty-three such wetlands have been identified and assigned the supplemental classification of Unique Wetland (UWL). These have been documented as habitat essential for the conservation of state or federally listed threatened or endangered species. The locations of the designated UWLs are shown in red on the map below. General descriptions of the sites are available in an excel file. More information on the UWL classification is available on the DWR Surface Waters Classification website and in the NC Surface Water Quality Standards rules.
