DEQ visits Firestone facility that goes beyond the regulatory requirements

Tuesday, July 12, 2016 - 12:00am

Secretary van der Vaart recently visited the Firestone Fibers and Textiles Kings Mountain facility to learn how the company is going above and beyond to run an environmentally-friendly business.

The plant manufactures tire cord and industrial fabrics and has achieved the highest level in the state’s Environmental Stewardship Initiative program. The voluntary ESI program promotes and encourages outstanding environmental performance by a wide range of North Carolina organizations. It encourages companies to implement pollution prevention measures, foster innovative approaches to meeting and exceeding regulatory requirements, and reduce their impact on the environment beyond required measures.

The Firestone Kings Mountain facility has not only shown a commitment to complying with regulations – it also has also established programs and activities that go beyond regulatory requirements. The plant achieved zero waste to landfill status in 2014 and has improved wildlife habitat on-site and raw materials utilization, among other accomplishments.
