County and municipality recycling numbers show 5 percent increase from last year

The state’s Recycling and Materials Management Section today released recycling numbers for all 100 counties and municipalities, showing a 5.3 percent increase in paper and container recycling as compared to the previous year. Local recycling programs collected more than 1.7 million tons of traditional and non-traditional materials last year.

Treatment of invasive Hydrilla to resume in Eno River

Herbicide treatment for an infestation of Hydrilla in the Eno River will resume today and continue through September. Hydrilla is a highly destructive, non-native aquatic plant that grows rapidly and creates thick mats on the surface of waterways. 

State extends public comment period for Duke Energy draft consent orders

The state Department of Environmental Quality has extended the public comment periods for two draft consent orders that will establish agreements for Duke Energy to drain coal ash ponds more quickly at the company’s Buck, Belews Creek, Mayo and Roxboro facilities. The consent orders will allow the utility to close out the impoundments earlier than the deadline that is required by the state Coal Ash Management Act.

State seeks public feedback on Duke Energy’s Buck Steam Station permits

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality is seeking public feedback on two draft stormwater permits and a draft wastewater permit for Duke Energy’s Buck Combined Cycle Station. The Rowan County facility discharges to the Yadkin River in the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin.   

Public information session about GenX scheduled for May 29

State officials announced an information session has been scheduled about the state’s ongoing activities related to the GenX investigation that originated at Chemours’ Fayetteville Works facility. The information session is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, at St. Pauls Middle School, located at 526 West Shaw Street in St. Pauls.

Public Information Session on proposed new PSNC Mill Spring Compressor Station

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ) is holding a public information session to accompany the public comment period on a proposed air quality permit for Public Service Company of North Carolina’s (PSNC) Mill Spring Compressor Station on Silver Creek Road in Polk County. The meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 23, in the R. Jay Foster Hall of Justice at the Bryant H. Womack Building located at 40 Courthouse Street in Columbus, North Carolina.  DAQ will provide a short presentation on the draft air quality permit and answer questions from attendees during the information session.
