The Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve encompasses a total of 1,890 acres, protecting several globally rare plant communities including maritime deciduous forest, maritime swamp forest, and interdune ponds. These natural communities provide habitat for a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
Join the Northern Site Manager for a 1-mile guided hike through one of the largest tracts of bald cypress on the Outer Banks. We may get lucky and hear the howl of a coyote or the hoot of an owl as we take an out-and-back hike across the connector boardwalk to the Birch Lane Trail. Participants will learn about the Reserve, the plants and animals that are protected by it, and hopefully catch a glimpse of the critters that become lively at dusk.

Multiple uses occur on the Reserve, and hunting season is open. Participants are encouraged to wear blaze orange for the hike.
Participants should meet at Kitty Hawk Park pavilion (900 W. Kitty Hawk Road) at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, October 30, where the hike will begin and end.
