Meeting scheduled to gather comments on modifications to Charlotte wastewater residuals distribution permit

Raleigh

RALEIGH – The state Division of Water Resources will hold a public meeting in Mount Pleasant March 24 to gather comments on proposed modifications to the Charlotte –Mecklenburg Utilities, Inc. permit for the distribution of wastewater treatment plant and water treatment plant residuals.

The permit (Water Quality Permit #WQ0000057) allows land application of 28,000 dry tons of Class B treated residuals each year. As part of this permit, the state allows treated waste to be applied to land in Anson, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Mecklenburg, Stanly and Union counties.

The proposed modification would remove 221 sites, totaling about 4,400 acres, from the current permit and will continue to allow application of the residuals to 6,233 acres. Some of the remaining sites are being renamed and many of the acreages are being updated as a result of setback restrictions and more accurate mapping.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. March 24 at Mount Pleasant High School, 700 Walker Road, Mount Pleasant. Registration for those who wish to speak begins at 6:30 p.m. Oral and written comments may be presented at the meeting. In addition, written comments may be sent to: Dave Goodrich, N.C. Division of Water Resources, Water Quality Permitting, 1617 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-1617. Comments will be accepted until March 30.

Copies of the proposed permit and the permit fact sheet are available through the DWR calendar entry for this event at: http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/wq/event-calendar .
