N.C. Coastal Resources Commission to hold special meeting Nov. 19

RALEIGH – The N.C. Coastal Resources Commission will conduct a special meeting at 1 p.m. Nov. 19 to consider two variance requests. The meeting will be held at the state Division of Coastal Management’sWilmington Office, located at 127 Cardinal Drive Ext. Public access to the meeting will be provided via telephone at the following Division of Coastal Management offices:

  • Morehead City Headquarters, 400 Commerce Ave.
  • Elizabeth City Office, 1367 U.S. 17 South
  • Washington Office, 943 Washington Square Mall

The first request is from four adjacent homeowners on Oak Island who are requesting a variance from the CRC’s rules in order to enlarge an existing sandbag structure on the properties in response to beach erosion. The proposed structure would exceed the size allowed by CRC rules.

The Town of North Topsail Beach is also requesting a variance from the CRC’s rules in order to construct a sandbag revetment to protect 20 imminently-threatened residential structures. The proposed structure would exceed the size allowed by CRC rules.
