State officials hosting September meetings to help public facilities reduce energy usage, save money

Raleigh
RALEIGH – Staff with N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources have scheduled seven meetings in September to train people who manage public facilities in North Carolina on ways to reduce utility costs and energy usage.
Staff with the Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service will train facility managers and decision-makers from state agencies, public universities, community colleges, local governments and schools hoping to cut their facilities’ utility costs and improve energy management. Staff will also offer instruction for participants exploring facility upgrades through the performance contracting process.
“This customer service initiative enables us to reach out to our partners in public service with practical solutions to challenges we all face,” said Joe Harwood, the department’s ombudsman. “It’s always a great thing when we can work together to protect the environment and reduce costs to taxpayers.”
The 2.5-hour sessions are part of the department’s Utility Savings Initiative, which has helped state agencies and universities avoid utility costs of more than $553 million since 2002. This outreach helps agencies continue their progress toward a 30 percent energy reduction goal by 2015.
The sessions in September will include topics such as new state energy efficiency goals, improvements to the performance contracting process and utilities management using a portfolio produced by the Environmental Protection Agency.
