The Mining and Energy Commission, in conjunction with other commissions and state agencies, has been directed to establish a modern oil and gas regulatory program. The commission created the committees and staffed them with their own members to address specific issues such as handling wastewater during natural gas extraction and the establishment of rules to protect the environment and property rights. Staff members with the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources are responsible for assisting the commission.
