Public Comment Period Opens: Duke Energy's Asheville Plant Draft Closure Plan

PUBLIC NOTICE
N.C. DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY REQUEST FOR PUBLIC COMMENT ON DRAFT COAL ASH POND CLOSURE PLAN FOR DUKE ENERGY PROGRESS’ ASHEVILLE STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT IN BUNCOMBE COUNTY

CLOSURE PLANS SUBMITTED
Duke Energy Progress, LLC has submitted to the Department of Environmental Quality proposed draft coal ash pond closure plans for the four coal ash facilities classified as high priority by the Coal Ash Management Act 2014. The proposed draft closure plans are currently under review by department staff and are not yet complete. A copy of the proposed draft closure plan for the Asheville facility may be reviewed at the Buncombe County Health Department, Skyland/South Buncombe Public Library or online at: https://deq.nc.gov/about/news/hot-topics/coal-ash-nc/closure.

PUBLIC COMMENTS
The public is encouraged to provide feedback on the draft proposed closure plan. All comments received by April 5, 2017 will be considered in determining whether the plan will be approved by the state. Public comments may also be submitted by email to: ashevillecomments@ncdenr.gov.

PUBLIC MEETING
In accordance with state law, the department will hold public meetings to provide information and receive comments in each county where the four high priority coal ash facilities are located. The public meeting for the Asheville Steam Electric Plant in Buncombe County will be held at 6 p.m. March 13 at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, Ferguson Auditorium, 340 Victoria Rd., Asheville, N.C., 28801. Speaker registration will begin at 5:30 p.m.
