RALEIGH – The N.C. Division of Waste Management will hold a public hearing Jan. 28 in Mooresville on a permit Duke Energy is seeking for an existing industrial landfill to handle coal ash and other waste at the utility’s Marshall Steam Station.
Duke is seeking permission to build two new areas and continue operating two existing areas of its industrial solid waste landfill at the Marshall Steam Station in Catawba County near Mooresville. In keeping with the Coal Ash Management Act, the draft permit seeks to ensure that coal ash is stored in a double-lined landfill away from surface water.
Gathering input at the hearing and during the comment period is an important part of the public process. All comments will be considered before a decision is made on the permit. The state determined that Duke Energy’s application satisfied the requirements of state law and opened the permit to public comments Dec. 30. By law, people have 60 days, or until Feb. 27, to comment on the permit application.
