The N.C. Coastal Reserve and town of Kitty Hawk are conducting a survey to develop an access plan for the Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve to maintain a balance between the site’s ecology and recreational uses.
The survey is open from Jan. 30 through March 10 and is available by going to:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/557JSMF.
The survey results will provide a better understanding of how and when visitors access the Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve, what activities visitors engage in at the site, and what access and trail enhancements may be appropriate.
The Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve is a rare example of an intact maritime forest. The reserve is an integral part of the Kitty Hawk community and provides opportunities for people to enjoy activities such as hiking, hunting and nature observation. The reserve also contributes to the protection of clean water, buffers the community from storm events, and adds to the aesthetic appeal of the town.
The N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve Program protects natural areas for education, research and compatible recreation. Since its creation in 1989, the program has preserved more than 42,000 acres of unique coastal environments at 10 sites along the coast.
A paper copy of the survey is also available for pickup at the town of Kitty Hawk, 101 Veterans Memorial Drive in Kitty Hawk.
