State coastal agency offering two free water quality workshops in May

The N.C. Division of Coastal Management is offering two free workshops for real estate and water resource professionals in May.

The goal of the first workshop is to teach real estate professionals about low-impact development basics for water quality protection. It will be held from 1-5 p.m. May 24 at the NOAA Beaufort Lab Auditorium, 101 Pivers Island Road, in Beaufort.

At this workshop, participants will:

  • Learn how land use decisions impact water quality.
  • Learn about low-impact development techniques that help protect water quality.
  • Learn about the costs and benefits of implementing low-impact development.
  • Learn about state permitting rules for stormwater control and low-impact development techniques.
  • Tour stormwater control measures on Pivers Island.

The goal of the second workshop is to teach water resource professionals, such as planners, landscape architects, certified floodplain managers and engineers, about planning strategies and tools to protect and restore coastal water quality. It will be held on from 9:30 a.m.- 3p.m. May 25 at the NOAA Beaufort Lab Auditorium, 101 Pivers Island Road, in Beaufort. The North Carolina Coastal Federation is co-sponsoring this workshop. At this workshop, participants will learn how watershed planning can protect and restore coastal water quality, as well as the stormwater volume reduction philosophy and the steps involved in creating a watershed restoration plan. Participants will also see stormwater control measures installed on Pivers Island.
