2023 Terrapin Tally

The Terrapin Tally is a citizen science project conducted in partnership with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to measure the status of diamondback terrapin populations. Volunteers work in pairs to conduct headcount surveys on specific kayak routes to document diamondback terrapin sightings. 

The annual Terrapin Tally project spans the coast from Carteret to Brunswick County. Register today! Dates for the 2023 Terrapin Tally will be: May 4-7, May 18-21, and June 1-4

Volunteers must register and attend one training session: 

  • April 11th, 6PM to 7:30PM  - Online via Zoom 

  • April 13th , 6PM to 7:30PM  - In person in Wilmington (UNCW Center for Marine Science)

  • April 15th,  10-11:30AM - In person at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium

Data collection sessions:
