Frequently Asked Questions About Striped Mullet Management
The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission adopted the Striped Mullet Fishery Management Plan Amendment 2 during its May 2024 business meeting. The goal of Amendment 2 is to manage the striped mullet fishery to achieve a self-sustaining population that provides sustainable harvest using science-based decision-making processes.

Amendment 2 management goes into effect in June 2024.
Amendment 2 affects both commercial and recreational fishing.

The commercial closures are:
- January 1 – September 30: 11:59 P.M. Friday – 12:01 A.M. Monday
- October 1 – December 31: 11:59 P.M. Friday – 12:01 A.M. Tuesday
All mullet must have reached the shore or a structure connected to the shore before the start time of the closure.

- 100 Fish Individual Bag Limit
- 400 Fish Vessel Limit
- For Hire Operations may possess the individual bag limit for all anglers fishing up to the 400 fish maximum (including in advance of a trip).
No, there is no closure for the recreational fishery.
Yes, with one important exception. Commercial fishing operations may not possess mullet during the commercial closure periods if there are gill nets onboard the vessel.
Yes, mullet may be sold and possessed by seafood dealers, fish houses, and bait shops during the commercial closure periods.
