Public comment period on Draft Permit 0403-MSWLF-2010 begins on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, and ends at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 20, 2023.
A public hearing is scheduled for October 26, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. in the Anson County Courthouse, 114 North Greene Street, Wadesboro.

On February 27, 2024, the Division of Waste Management issued Solid Waste Permit No. 3402-MSWLF-1997, Permit to Construct (File ID 1831042), for the Hanes Mill Road Landfill allowing horizontal expansion to add additional capacity and to extend the life of the facility located at 325 W. Hanes Mill Road, Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC. The Division determined that the application for new permit complied with the requirements of the
North Carolina Solid Waste Management Rules as codified at 15A NCAC 13B Section .1600, and that the application did not meet any of the reasons for denial found in the Solid Waste Management Statutes [NCGS 130A‐294(h)].
North Carolina Solid Waste Management Rules require that the public be provided an opportunity to review permit documents, provide input, and comment on the draft new landfill permit. The 45-day comment period for this permit action began on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, and ended on Friday, February 23, 2024. The administrative record, including the draft permit, permit application, and related documents, were available for review by appointment from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the Division of Waste Management office, 217 West Jones Street, Raleigh, NC, as well as online at https://bit.ly/3PCx93A. Persons wishing to comment on the draft permit were requested to submit their comments by 5 p.m., Friday, February 23, 2024. No comments were received by the public during the public comment period. A public hearing was held on February 8, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at the DEQ Winston -Salem Regional Office, 450 W. Hanes Mill Road, Suite 300, Winston-Salem. Potential speakers would have been allowed to present their comments during the hearing; however, there were no public comments received at the hearing.
On March 19, 2024, the Division of Waste Management issued Solid Waste Permit No. 5203-CDLF-2013, Permit to Construct (File ID 1832080), for the Maysville Construction and Demolition Landfill allowing horizontal and vertical expansion to add additional capacity and to extend the life of the facility located at 11710 Highway 17, Maysville, Jones County, NC. The Division determined that the application for new permit complied with the requirements of the North Carolina Solid Waste Management codified at 15A NCAC 13B and that the application did not meet any of the reasons for denial found in the Solid Waste Management Statutes [NCGS 130A‐294(h)].

Persons who wished to provide comments were requested to submit comments in writing by 5 p.m., Monday, March 18, 2024. No comments were received from the public within the public comment period.
The Division of Waste Management - Solid Waste Section has prepared Draft Permit 6504-MSWLF-2017 to allow increased disposal capacity (changes to base grades and closure grades), an increase in waste acceptance rate, and an increase in the facility boundary at the New Hanover County MSW Landfill Facility located at 5210 US Highway 421 North, Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC. The draft permit is available for public review and comment.
Public comment period on Draft Permit 6504-MSWLF-2017 begins on Monday, February 5, 2024, and ends at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2024. A public hearing is scheduled for Monday, February 26, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. The public hearing will be held at the Pine Valley Library (Osprey Room) located at 3802 S. College Rd, Wilmington, NC 28412.

Department of Environmental Quality’s Solid Waste Section has prepared draft Solid Waste Permit No. 9001-CDLF-1998 that would approve a horizontal and vertical expansion to the Union County Construction and Demolition Debris Landfill (CDLF). The draft permit is available for public review and comment. A public hearing is scheduled for April 3, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at Union County Government Center, 500 North Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina, Board of Commissioners Meeting Room, 1st Floor.
The public comment period on Permit No. 9001-CDLF-1998 begins on March 18, 2024, and ends at 5:00 p.m. on May 2, 2024.

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality’s Solid Waste Section has prepared draft Solid Waste Permit No. 0406-COMPOST-2024 that would approve the construction and operation of the McGill Anson Compost Facility, on Dozer Drive, Polkton, in Anson County.
The Large Type 4 compost facility would be owned and operated by McGill Environmental Facilities, LLC, a subsidiary of Green Parent, LLC. The facility would receive the following for composting: municipal wastewater biosolids, select industrial sludges, food waste, wood ash, yard and wood waste, and other organic waste such as plants.
Primary operations of the large Type 4 compost operation would be contained within a building.
Public Meeting: The N.C. Dept. of Environmental Quality is holding a public meeting to receive comments and answer questions regarding the proposed compost facility. The meeting will be held at the Hampton B. Allen Library, 120 S Greene St, in Wadesboro, on April 11, 2024, at 6:30 pm. Interested parties may submit oral or written statements at the public meeting.

DWM Solid Waste Section Environmental Justice Guidance Document
DWM Solid Waste Section Environmental Justice Workshop
The Solid Waste Section and DEQ's Environmental Justice Program, in partnership with NC SWANA, held an Environmental Justice Workshop on June 28, 2022. The workshop included the history and background of environmental justice in North Carolina as well as a panel discussion. Primarily, the workshop was geared toward environmental consultants who gather data, prepare EJ Reports, and craft outreach efforts. The training can be viewed at the link above.
