Melodi Deaver, administrative specialist in the Hazardous Waste Section’s Compliance Branch, is one of three finalists for the Division of Waste Management’s Employee of the Year Award, the recipients of which are nominated by fellow colleagues who have gone above-and-beyond in their service to the public and the regulated community, while striving to showcase the mission of the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality.
Nominated for her unquestionable quality of work, willingness to help and superior consistency, Deaver is known to take on challenging tasks that have stumped others and find unique ways to solve problems.
Currently, she handles all RCRA inspection and compliance data management and related customer service for the section’s Compliance Branch. In addition, Deaver continues to assist with various duties related to her former roles, such as training Financial and Information and Management Unit staff on RCRAInfo data input and notification form processing; assisting on the Biennial Report; preparing and mailing letters; formatting permits; and responding to various customer requests.
Deaver’s nominator describes her as always “seeking out opportunities to be of assistance for the greater good of the entire team. Her positive attitude is infectious and makes the working environment not only palatable but inspiring.”
She has often filled in for vacant positions, completing tasks that are out of her purview. She has helped interview potential staff members, write the Unit business rules and processes, help oversee large projects and train Unit staff.
Deaver’s constant willingness to help with a constant positive attitude makes her an integral part of the Waste Management team.
