2020 Coastal Policy and Restoration Internship

February 11, 2020

The Reserve has partnered with the North Carolina Coastal Federation to offer two summer internships. The interns will participate in the federation’s Coastal Policy and Restoration Internship program and work on one of two projects assigned by the Coastal Reserve. Learn more about the internship program and the two internship projects below.

Coastal Policy and Restoration Internship Program

The North Carolina Coastal Federation is a member-supported nonprofit environmental organization committed to protecting and restoring the North Carolina coast. The Coastal Federation provides an exciting opportunity for students to work with our established and successful organization. Working alongside dedicated professional staff, interns will engage in:

  • Coastal policy and advocacy
  • Coastal habitat protection and restoration
  • Environmental education
  • Community collaboration

Interns will also learn about the inner workings of nonprofit management, including public relations, strategic planning, marketing, board of directors’ management, communications, fundraising and nonprofit governance.

Projects

  • Grant Writing Workshop - The Coastal Reserve’s Coastal Training Program has offered grant writing workshops for decision-makers in the past, but has lost many of the expert speakers that presented at these events. To continue to provide this service, and also reach graduate students, we need help developing grant writing curriculum. Students must be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of application. For more information, see the Grant Writing Workshop internship flyer.
  • Educational Tool Development - The Coastal Reserve’s Coastal Training Program uses an interactive game to help coastal-decision makers understand how land use choices affect water quality and how to use best management practices to prevent adverse effects. The game needs updating to improve water quality workshops and outreach efforts. Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of application. For more information, see the Educational Tools internship flyer.
