Notice of Intent to Issue a NPDES Wastewater Permit NC0082520 Pine Knoll Shores WTP The North Carolina Environmental Management Commission proposes to issue a NPDES wastewater discharge permit to the person(s) listed below. Written comments regarding the proposed permit will be accepted 30 days after the publish date of this notice. The Director of the NC Division of Water Resources (DWR) may hold a public hearing should there be a significant degree of public interest. The Town of Pine Knoll Shores has applied to renew NPDES permit NC0082520 for the proposed Pine Knoll Shores WTP (proposed location: Oakleaf Drive, Pine Knoll Shores) in Carteret County. This facility would discharge into Pine Knoll Shores Canal (Bouge Sound) in the White Oak river basin. Currently, total residual chlorine (TRC), total suspended solids (TSS), and dissolved oxygen (DO) would be water quality limited. Some of the parameters in the permit are water quality limited. This discharge may affect future allocations in this segment of Fourth Creek." N.C. DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY INTENT TO ISSUE NPDES WASTEWATER DISCHARGE PERMIT #NC0090212

Public comment or objection to the draft permit is invited. All comments received by March 11, 2024, will be considered in the final determination regarding permit issuance and permit provisions.
PERMIT APPLICATION
Albemarle Corporation, 4250 Congress St., Suite 900, Charlotte, N.C., has applied for a New NPDES wastewater permit (NC0090212) for Kings Mountain Mine, 348 Holiday Inn Dr., Kings Mountain, Cleveland County. The facility discharges industrial wastewater and stormwater to Kings Creek in the Broad River basin. Some parameters are water quality limited. This discharge may affect future allocations in this portion of the Broad River basin. The location of Outfall 001 is: Latitude: 35012.42’70”; Longitude: 81021’19.05”.

Public Comment Period Opens: Albemarle Corporation-NPDES Wastewater Permit NC0090212 for Albemarle Kings Mountain Lithium Project

For the first time since Aug. 8, 2023, there are no counties in North Carolina listed in drought status, according to the DMAC. However, all or parts of five counties were still listed as “abnormally dry:” Cherokee, Clay, Dare, Graham and Macon.

Net emissions of greenhouse gases have fallen 38% between 2005 and 2020 in North Carolina, according to the latest update of the state Greenhouse Gas Inventory, released today by the Department of Environmental Quality.

Telephone numbers at the Division of Coastal Management (DCM) office in Elizabeth City have changed. The new main number is 252-621-6450.

The N.C. Division of Coastal Management (DCM) has certified its latest North Carolina Clean Marina, a designation given to marinas that exceed minimum regulatory requirements. Ocean Isle Marina in Brunswick County received certification in January.

The City of Burlington has notified the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources of elevated 1,4 dioxane levels discharged into the Haw River from the South Burlington Wastewater Treatment Plant.
