Household Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste Technical Resource Guide for NC Local Governments

This HHW technical resource guide was created by the Carolina Recycling Association Household Hazardous Waste Council and the NC Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service to assist local governments in creating and maintaining temporary household hazardous waste (HHW) collection events and permanent HHW collection facilities. The guide provides information on applicable laws and regulations, NC HHW programs, types of HHW collection, HHW vendors and contractors, NC DEQ's permit and application processes, program costs and funding, event planning, and employee training. The guide also includes example requests for proposals, permanent facility operations and contingency plans, a planning timeline for temporary collection events, a temporary collection event participant survey, and a collection event advertising template.

Operational dates for permanent HHW facilities range from a few select days per year in some counties to multiple days per week year-round in others. Refer to the local government solid waste website (link provided) for operational dates and hours. More information about HHW programs is also found on the Solid Waste Section's HHW webpage

The data is maintained by the Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service (DEACS) Recycling and Materials Management Section and updated on an annual basis from the Division of Waste Management's Solid Waste Section's permit reports.
