2022 Terrapin Tally Training

The Terrapin Tally is a community science project conducted in partnership with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to measure the status of diamondback terrapin populations. Volunteers work in pairs to conduct headcount surveys on specific kayak routes to document diamondback terrapin sightings. 

For the 9th season of the Terrapin Tally project, we will paddle eleven sites, spanning the coast from Carteret to Brunswick County.

  • Rachel Carson Reserve 
  • Calico Creek
  • Hammocks Beach State Park
  • Lea Hutaff Island 
  • Masonboro Island Reserve
  • Carolina Beach State Park
  • Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
  • Zeke's Island Reserve
  • Bald Head Island
  • Bird Island Reserve 

Volunteers must register and attend one virtual training session: 

  • April 7, 2022  from 6-7:30 pm
  • April 9, 2022 from 10-11:30 am

Data collection sessions are conducted in 2-hour blocks between 7am - 2pm, which vary by site and depend on the tide. Sampling will occur on the following days:

  • April 28 - May 1
  • May 4 - 7
  • May 13 - 15
