This posting is to notify the public of a request by General Electric Company to modify its Hazardous Waste Management Permit for post-closure care (Permit No. NCD 003 237 948-R3), issued by NCDEQ, Division of Waste Management on February 4, 2021. for its former Hickory Manufacturing facility located at 1223 Fairgrove Church Road in Conover (Catawba County). The requested Class II permit modification will allow GE to add three additional recovery wells to the existing Remedial Action System (RAS) network. The RAS is designed to capture and treat residual contaminated groundwater. The addition of these three recovery wells will improve capture and reduce elevated groundwater concentrations from entering the adjacent western stream. GE submitted, and NCDEQ approved, the Groundwater Investigation Report & Proposed RAS Expansion Plan (report) in July 2021, which summarizes the prior investigation activities and proposed RAS expansion related to the permit modification.

There will be a public comment period beginning Sunday, October 3rd and ending Wednesday, November 17, 2021.

A public meeting will be held on Thursday, October 14, at 1 p.m. at the Downtown Park, 112 2nd Avenue, NE in Conover, North Carolina. An online meeting will be conducted at the same time. All attendees will have the opportunity to present five-minute oral statements regarding the requested permit modification and/or to submit written comments.
