Governor Pat McCrory has awarded $75,000 in grants to five coastal cities and towns for local planning and management that will help them prepare for the future.
The awards are:
- A $15,000 grant to Morehead to assess flooding vulnerability and to enhance a program that helps the city lower residents’ flood insurance premiums
- A $15,000 grant to each of the towns of Edenton/Chowan County, Ocean Isle Beach, Wrightsville Beach, and Shalotte to update their land use plans including the most recent demographic and policy information, which will help the communities plan for future growth
“These grants will help local leaders guide the development of their communities while balancing economic development and resource protection,” said Governor McCrory. “Partnerships between state and local governments are essential in ensuring that we have a healthy coast for years to come.”
Some examples of land use planning projects include mapping and data collection, updating land use plans, beach access plans, erosion control plans, and waterfront redevelopment. Funds also may be used for stormwater, water and sewer planning.
The state’s coastal management agency helps local governments in the 20 coastal counties fund local land-use planning and management projects. Grant recipients were selected based on criteria set by the state’s coastal commission.
