The state environmental department notified Duke Energy today that it must submit plans to address the environmental impact of flooding caused by Hurricane Matthew on the H.F. Lee Energy Complex.
Environmental inspectors made site visits to the Lee facility on Saturday after a minimal amount of coal ash was released from an inactive basin, and again on Monday to investigate the release of a coal ash byproduct that includes cenospheres. The department is evaluating reports from Duke Energy and information gathered by state inspectors, including water samples, to determine if any enforcement action is necessary.
