State environmental officials have extended the public comment period for a water quality permit for Duke Energy’s retired power plant in Chatham County.
The federally mandated National Pollution Discharge Elimination System, or NPDES, wastewater permit is a necessary first step towards permanently closing the ash ponds at the Cape Fear Steam Electric Plant, which is located at 500 CP&L Rd. in Moncure. The draft permit includes requirements for all wastewater to be treated prior to discharging.

Public comments on the draft permit should be mailed to: Wastewater Permitting, Attn: Cape Fear, 1617 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C., 27699-1617.

In response to requests from members of the public, the comment period for the Cape Fear Steam Electric Plant draft wastewater permit has been extended one week. The public comment period now ends Monday, Dec. 5. All comments received by that date will be considered in the final determination regarding permit modification and issuance.
