People invited to celebrate National Estuaries Day

Beaufort, NC
Sep 14, 2017

The North Carolina Division of Coastal Management’s Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve is inviting coastal residents to celebrate National Estuaries Day.

The N.C. Coastal Reserve will host an event in partnership with the N.C. Maritime Museum on Sept. 23 in downtown Beaufort. This free, educational event will take place outside the N.C. Maritime Museum from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 315 Front Street in Beaufort. Educators and scientists will present information and activities about coastal science and the importance of estuaries.

Exhibitors will include North Carolina Sea Grant, Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership, N.C. State University’s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Institute of Marine Sciences, Duke University Marine Lab, Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center, and Cape Lookout National Seashore.

National Estuaries Week runs from Sept. 16 to 23. The event is an annual celebration of estuaries, the vibrant coastal areas where rivers meet the sea. It is a great opportunity to learn more about these diverse ecosystems and how people can help protect them. North Carolina’s estuarine system is the third largest in the country, encompassing more than 2 million acres.
