State hosting third information session Dec. 14 on private well sampling near Chemours

Raleigh, NC

The state departments of Environmental Quality and Health and Human Services will host a third community information session on Thursday, Dec. 14, to answer questions about drinking water well results from the well sampling conducted near Chemours’ Fayetteville Works facility in Bladen County.

WHAT: Information session about the state’s sampling results, plans to continue well sampling, alternative water solutions

WHEN: 6 – 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 14

WHERE: Gray’s Creek High School Auditorium located at 5301 Celebration Dr. in Hope Mills N.C. 28348

The third community meeting is being held in the Gray’s Creek area to provide people with updated information on the GenX investigation at the request of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners.

State officials and Chemours began collecting water samples for testing from drinking water wells Sept. 15 as part of an ongoing GenX investigation. During this initial sampling, 141 wells were sampled and 51 showed concentrations of GenX above the state’s provisional health goal. Fifty-five wells showed detections below the health goal and 35 did not have detections of GenX.

In mid-October, at the state’s request, Chemours expanded its sampling to 450 parcels located one mile from the facility’s property line. Earlier this week, DEQ released verified data that showed 107 wells have been sampled. Of those 107 wells, 34 had concentrations of GenX above the state’s provisional health goal, 48 showed detections of GenX below the health goal and 25 wells showed no detections of GenX.

DEQ will share results from the expanded sampling as they are received and verified.

State environmental and health officials will be on-hand at the Dec. 14 information session to answer questions about the sampling efforts, results from both the initial and expanded rounds of sampling, plans to continue testing of drinking water wells, and status of alternative water solutions.
