State officials have announced a new location for the continuation of a public hearing to seek additional feedback on a permit application from Malec Brothers Transport, LLC. Additionally, the Division of Air Quality (DAQ) will hold a public information session at 6:00 pm, one hour prior to that hearing. Both sessions will take place on May 15 at East Columbus High School, 32 Gator Lane in Lake Waccamaw on the Malec Brothers’ draft permit.

Due to expected high attendance, parking limitations and ADA compliance considerations, a county official contacted DAQ today to offer the high school auditorium space for the public event. Due to interest in the permitting process, the information session was added to the rule-required public hearing.

Earlier this week, DAQ announced the public comment period extension to May 18.

Malec Brothers Transport, which is based in Australia, has applied to the N.C. Division of Air Quality, or DAQ, for a permit to use methyl bromide to fumigate logs at a facility the company plans to open in Delco, a community about 18 miles west of Wilmington. The company is seeking a permit to treat logs with methyl bromide in shipping containers before the products are exported.
