The N.C. Division of Water Resources has extended until Jan. 24, 2019 the public comment period for a draft modified wastewater permit for the Siler City Wastewater Treatment Plant. The agency will also host a Jan. 24 public hearing to provide community members with an additional opportunity to submit feedback on the draft permit.

The proposed permit modification would add nitrogen limits and associated requirements to the Chatham County facility’s existing permit conditions. The facility discharges treated industrial and domestic wastewater to Loves Creek, a nutrient-impaired waterway in the Cape Fear River basin.

Public comments on the draft modified permit may be submitted by mail to: DWR-Wastewater Permitting, Attn: Siler City WWTP, 1617 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C., 27699-1617. Public comments may also be submitted by email to: publiccomments@ncdenr.gov. Please be sure to include “Siler City WWTP” in the email’s subject line.

The draft wastewater permit is available online at: https://bit.ly/2QZUGPI. A printed copy of the draft permit may also be reviewed at the division’s Raleigh Regional Office. To make an appointment to review the draft permit, please call 919-791-4200.

A public hearing on the draft modified permit is planned for 6 p.m. Jan. 24, 2019 at the Siler City Town Hall Courtroom, 311 N. 2nd Avenue, Siler City, N.C. Speaker registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. The division will consider all comments received by Jan. 24, 2019 in making its final determination on the proposed permit modification.
