RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality has approved Chemours’ request to temporarily suspend off-site private well sampling efforts and filtration system installations based on current public health guidance to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Bottled water will continue to be delivered as scheduled, and sampling results will be provided to residents whose wells were tested prior to March 25, 2020. Residents who have received results and are awaiting installation of filtration systems will receive bottled water until their system is installed.
Maintenance of installed reverse osmosis (RO) and granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration systems will also be provided, if necessary, as requested by the resident and with the resident’s permission to be on the property or enter the premise. Chemours’ third-party consultant will continue quarterly sampling of GAC filtration systems, with property owner’s permission.
DEQ will monitor the situation and direct Chemours to resume private well sampling and filtration system installation according to public health guidance.
Separately, video of the presentations prepared for the PFAS/GenX community information session originally scheduled for March 12 is now available online at https://deq.nc.gov/CommunityInfo. The video includes updates on current progress and implementation of the Consent Order, information on the Corrective Action Plan and updates on the private well-sampling program. The website also includes additional information on well testing for residents in the vicinity of the Chemours Fayetteville Works facility.
The March 12 in-person meeting was postponed to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and a rescheduled date will be announced when appropriate.
