State accepting applications for projects to be funded by VW Settlement

The application period for the first round of funding under the Volkswagen Settlement program opens today. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality has posted the applications for Diesel Bus and Vehicle projects that significantly reduce emissions and for Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) DC Fast Charge Infrastructure projects.

Public Hearing on draft permit for Enviva Pellets Sampson facility on July 15

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ) will host a public meeting and public hearing on Monday, July 15, on a draft permit for Enviva Pellets Sampson, LLC.  The facility has applied for modifications of the existing Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) permit to incorporate air pollution control equipment and an increase in production.

Air Permit Issued for Cape Fear Coal Ash Beneficiation facility in Chatham County

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Air Quality has issued an air permit for the coal ash beneficiation project at Duke Energy Progress’s former Cape Fear Power Station in Moncure, North Carolina. The permit applies to the installation and operation of a Staged Turbulent Air Reactor (STAR) to convert fly ash for use in cement.  In response to public comments, the Division of Air Quality staff revised the original draft permit to include additional recordkeeping and reporting.

The hearing will be held in the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center in Pittsboro.

State Issues Air Permit for Chemours to Install Thermal Oxidizer to Reduce PFAS Emissions

The N.C . Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ) has issued a permit to Chemours for the installation and operation of a thermal oxidizer/scrubber system to reduce air emissions of PFAS and GenX at the Fayetteville Works Facility.  The permit incorporates the requirements of the consent order signed on February 25, 2019 to install the thermal oxidizer by December 31, 2019 and reduce all PFAS emissions by 99% beyond the 2017 baseline.
