Currently fecal coliform and total residual chlorine are water quality limited. This discharge may affect future allocations in this portion of Little Whiteoak Creek. N.C. DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY INTENT TO ISSUE NPDES WASTEWATER DISCHARGE PERMIT #NC0090239

Public comment or objection to the draft permit is invited. All comments received by August 4, 2023, will be considered in the final determination regarding permit issuance and permit provisions.

PERMIT APPLICATION
Ely Lilly and Company, 1420 Concord Parkway South, Concord, N.C., has applied for a new NPDES wastewater permit (NC0090239) for its Concord facility in Cabarrus County. The facility discharges cooling water to unnamed tributary to Coddle Creek in the Catawba River basin. No parameters are water quality limited. This discharge may affect future allocations in this portion of the Catawba River basin. The locations of Outfall 001 is: Latitude: 35023’27.0”; Longitude: 80038’6.3”; Outfall 002 is: Latitude: 35023’29.1”; Longitude: 80037’40.7”; Outfall 003 is: Latitude: 35023’32.7”; Longitude: 80037’59.3”.

The N.C. Division of Coastal Management and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are urging the public to act responsibly during the upcoming July Fourth holiday at the Masonboro Island Reserve, a research reserve and dedicated state nature preserve. In preparation for the holiday, the state coastal agency and the sheriff’s office are working together to provide public safety resources and increase public awareness of responsible visitor behavior on the island.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has completed its Department-wide email address change. Now, all DEQ email addresses will use the @deq.nc.gov domain.

The application period ends June 30 for N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve local advisory committees. Community members are needed for each of the Coastal Reserve’s ten sites: Bird Island Reserve, Bald Head Woods Reserve, Zeke’s Island Reserve, Masonboro Island Reserve, Permuda Island Reserve, Rachel Carson Reserve, Buxton Woods Reserve, Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve, Currituck Banks Reserve, and Emily and Preyer Buckridge Reserve.
