Facility Siting & Expansion

Finding the right location for a facility is crucial to a business's success. The Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina offers an online inventory of available sites and buildings that have undergone a prequalification process.

In cooperation with the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, RBAC employs an industrial recruiter dedicated to recruiting new recycling industries to North Carolina. Contact Wendy Worley at 919-707-8136 if you are interested in locating in North Carolina.

Permitting

Some recycling businesses may require environmental permits in order to protect human health and the environment. The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has environmental assistance coordinators throughout the state to assist residents, businesses and local governments in identifying environmental permits for any project. Whether you are seeking to start a new business, expanding, or modifying processes at an existing business, environmental assistance coordinators aid customers in understanding the regulatory requirements of a project to ensure success on the front end.

DEQ also provides an Express Permitting option that offers a more timely review of certain environmental permits. It offers quicker decisions on permits and certifications, as well as direct consultation with DEQ division staff to identify necessary requirements.

Recycling Works Newsletter

RBAC's quarterly newsletter, Recycling Works, discusses current topics of interest to recycling businesses, including information on financing opportunities, commodity markets and new technologies. Sign-up to receive the online newsletter by e-mail. For questions or more information, contact a staff member.

Start-Up Business

Business Planning

Download the Guide to Starting a Recycling Business

The most critical part of starting up a business is writing a business plan. A business plan describes the business, its objectives, strategies, market and financial forecast. It is the roadmap and communication tool for the company. RBAC can assist start-ups with reviewing portions of your business plan pertaining to recycling markets.

The Small Business Association has a great online resource for writing a business plan including examples. The North Carolina Small Business Association and other local offices also offer training and one-on-one assistance.

The North Carolina Small Business and Technology Development Center and the Service Corps of Retired Executives help start-up businesses address a wide-range of issues such as financing, marketing, human resources, operations, business planning, strategy and feasibility assessments.

N.C. Secretary of State

The North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State works with the private and public sectors to help strengthen North Carolina’s economy.  All businesses in North Carolina must register their company with the N.C. Secretary of State.
