Coal Ash Closure Options – January 2019

 

Coal ash impoundment closure options:

  • Belews Creek Steam Station
  • Mayo Power Station
  • Marshall Steam Station
  • Cliffside Steam Station
  • Roxboro Power Station
  • Allen Steam Station
 
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will hold a series of public information sessions near six coal ash facilities across North Carolina where communities can learn about options for closing coal ash impoundments. The sessions will offer question and answer tables about specific topics relating to environmental and public health considerations, and the opportunity for community members to express their views about proposed criteria to guide DEQ’s coal ash closure decision-making process.                        

The meetings will be held at 6:00 p.m. on the following dates and will discuss how those options pertain to issues of groundwater, surfacewater, air quality and dam safety, and public safety and welfare:

Jan. 10: Walnut Cove Elementary School
Address: 1211 Walnut Cove School Road, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.
Agenda: To discuss closure options for coal ash impoundments at Belew’s Creek Steam Station.
 
Jan. 15: Mayo Park Environmental Education Community Center
Address: 1013 Neal's Store Rd, Roxboro, NC 27574.
Agenda: To discuss closure options for coal ash impoundments at Mayo Power Station.
 
Jan. 17: Sherrills Ford Elementary School
Address: 8103 Sherrills Ford Rd, Sherrills Ford, NC 28673.
Agenda: To discuss closure options for coal ash impoundments at Marshall Steam Station.
 
Jan. 22: Chase High School

Jan. 24: Person High School
