2017 Coal Ash Closure Plans

As directed by the Coal Ash Management Act 2014, Duke Energy Progress, LLC has submitted draft coal ash pond closure plans to the Department of Environmental Quality for the four coal ash facilities that the law classifies as high priority. The draft closure plans are currently under review by department staff.

The public is encouraged to provide feedback on the draft closure plans. All comments received by April 5, 2017 will be considered in determining if the plans will be approved by the state. Written comments may be submitted to: N.C. Division of Water Resources, Attn: Debra Watts, 1636 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1636. Written comments may also be submitted by email using the links shown below.

In accordance with state law, the department will hold public meetings to receive comments in each county where the four high priority coal ash facilities are located. Public meeting information is shown below.

A copy of the proposed draft closure plan for the Asheville facility may also be reviewed at the Buncombe County Department of Health & Human Services and Skyland/South Buncombe Public Library.
A public meeting is planned for 6 p.m. March 13 at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College Ferguson Auditorium. Speaker registration begins at 5:30 p.m.

Dan River Steam Station

A copy of the proposed draft closure plan for the Dan River facility may also be reviewed at the Rockingham County Department of Health & Human Services and Eden Public Library.
A public meeting is planned for 6 p.m. March 14 at Eden City Hall. Speaker registration begins at 5:30 p.m.

Riverbend Steam Station

A copy of the proposed draft closure plan for the Riverbend facility may also be reviewed at the Gaston County Department of Health & Human Services and Charlotte Mecklenburg-Mountain Island Public Library.
A public meeting is planned for 6 p.m. March 16 at Gaston College Myers Center Auditorium. Speaker registration begins at 5:30 p.m.

Sutton Steam Plant
