Following EPA reporting guidelines, negative values may be displayed in our hourly criteria air quality data, down to the negative of the EPA listed Method Detection Limit (MDL) for the particular instrument that made the measurements. This means the accuracy and measurement range of the instrumentation may include a lower limit below zero to account for the accuracy rate of plus or minus 10%, which can be roughly compared to a margin of error.
Additionally, EPA generally allows negative data for PM2.5 continuous monitors down to a -10 µg/m3 with flagging being applied for data between -5 µg/m3 and -10 µg/m3 in AQS.
Prior to 1/1/2013, slightly negative values were automatically set to zero by EPA in Air Quality System (AQS) database. Subsequent to that time, EPA has had a long standing convention of allowing negative data into AQS and being used in calculations. The reasoning being that invalidating negative data values or correcting to 0 would lead to biasing data higher.
In the case of the DCAMs, these conventions were followed when calculating various statistical values such as 24-hr averages; however, for clarity in presentation, the negative values were graphed as zero.
